Texas Hold’em is one of the most popular forms of poker and can be found in casinos, card rooms, and homes all over the world. Whether you’re an experienced card player or just getting started, understanding the fundamentals of the game is essential if you want to maximize your chances at the table.
The Basics
Texas Hold’em is a community card game where each player is dealt two cards face down (hole cards), then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages – first three (the flop), fourth (the turn) and fifth (the river). At each stage, players must make their best hand with five total cards (two hole cards plus any three community cards). The goal of the game is to make the best possible hand and win all of the chips in play.
Betting Rounds
Players have four options on each betting round: fold, call, raise or check (only available when no bet has been made yet). The amount wagered increases each round from pre-flop to post-river. A player who has wagered more than anyone else on a particular betting round can also ‘re-raise’ someone if they wish to increase their stake further. The final betting round takes place after all five community cards have been revealed; this is known as ‘the river’.
Blinds & Antes
Each round requires someone to bet something before any other action takes place – this is known as ‘posting a blind’. Players must either post small blinds and big blinds or agree on an ante that everyone contributes before play begins. Blinds increase every few rounds while antes remain constant throughout the play.
